If your SASSA SRD status check is not working, showing an error, or returning a result you do not understand, the most common causes are a wrong ID number, a mismatched phone number, an identity verification failure, a UIF or income flag, or a temporary outage on the SASSA portal. Most errors are fixed by correcting your details on srd.sassa.gov.za or submitting a reconsideration appeal within 90 days.
The grant is now R370 (the older R350 name refers to the 2020 to 2023 amount). SASSA re-runs its verification checks every month, matching your ID against Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, NSFAS and the banks, so a status can change from one month to the next even if nothing changed on your side.
How to Do Your SASSA SRD Status Check Using Your ID Number
Before troubleshooting, make sure you are checking correctly and on the official portal.
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za.
Enter your 13-digit South African ID number exactly as it appears on your ID document.
Enter the cellphone number you used when you applied for the grant.
Click Submit.
Your status for each month appears on screen.
Only use srd.sassa.gov.za. This is the single official portal for the SRD status check. Never enter your ID number on other "status check" websites shared in WhatsApp groups or on social media, including look-alike domains and app links. Scammers use these to steal personal information. SASSA will never charge a fee to check your status or fix an error.
Alternative Ways to Check If the Portal Is Not Working
If srd.sassa.gov.za is down or you have no data, use one of these official channels. All return the same result from SASSA's database.
Method
How to use
WhatsApp
Message 082 046 8553 and follow the prompts
USSD
Dial 1203210# from your registered number (data-free)
Toll-free call
Call 0800 60 10 11 with your ID and phone number ready
Moya App
Data-free app; check your status without airtime
SASSA office
Visit in person with your South African ID document
USSD codes occasionally change. If one does not work, confirm the current code on sassa.gov.za rather than trusting a code from a WhatsApp message.
Why Does My SASSA Status Say Failed?
"Failed" almost always means identity verification failed. SASSA compares your details against the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) database, and if your name, surname, ID number or date of birth does not match DHA records exactly, the application is flagged.
This is also the error behind the on-screen messages "Department of Home Affairs validation failed for applicant, please rectify" and "Your previous eKYC attempt was unsuccessful, kindly proceed with the reverification process." They are the same underlying problem: your identity did not match, or could not be confirmed, against Home Affairs.
Why it happens:
A typing error in your name or ID number during application.
Your ID was recently renewed and Home Affairs has not updated the database yet.
Your name appears differently across documents, such as initials versus full name.
Home Affairs holds outdated or incorrect records for your ID.
You applied using someone else's phone, and the name on the SIM does not match your ID.
How to fix it:
Log into srd.sassa.gov.za and compare the details on your application against your physical ID document, checking every letter, space and digit.
If you find an error, correct it on the portal and resubmit.
If your application details are correct but it still fails, visit your nearest Department of Home Affairs office to confirm your ID records are up to date. Take your ID book or smart card.
Complete the eKYC reverification on the portal if prompted, following the "Your previous eKYC attempt was unsuccessful" link to redo the identity step.
Submit a reconsideration appeal at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeal for each month showing failed. You have 90 days from each declined month to appeal.
If your appeal is not resolved within 90 days, contact the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA). This is free and does not require a lawyer.
SASSA Status Check Returns No Result or "Not Found"
You entered your details, clicked Submit, and nothing appeared, or the system says your application was not found.
Why it happens:
You entered the wrong phone number. You must use the exact number registered during your application, not a new number after a SIM change.
You entered your ID number with a typo. Even one wrong digit returns no result.
You applied very recently and your application has not yet loaded, which can take 24 to 72 hours.
Someone applied on your behalf under a different phone number.
How to fix it:
Re-check every digit of your 13-digit ID number.
Try the phone number you had at the time of application.
If you have changed your number, update it on srd.sassa.gov.za first, then check again.
If you applied recently, wait 48 to 72 hours and retry.
If nothing works, call 0800 60 10 11 and ask staff to locate your application by ID number.
SASSA Status Declined: What It Means and How to Appeal
"Declined" means SASSA assessed your application for that specific month and found you did not meet the eligibility criteria. It is per month. Being declined one month does not permanently ban you, because SASSA re-checks every month.
Common decline reasons and fixes:
Income above the threshold. SASSA detected a deposit exceeding the means-test threshold for that month. If it was a once-off payment, money from family, or a misidentified source, appeal and explain it.
Other grant or income source detected (self-exclusion). If SASSA detects NSFAS, another SASSA grant, UIF, a pension or a salary, you may see "declined" or "self-exclusion response found." Appeal with supporting documents if it is wrong.
Duplicate application. Your ID or phone number appears on more than one application. Do not reapply. Contact SASSA to resolve it.
Bank account not in your name. Payments only go to an account in your own name, matching your ID. Update your banking details on the portal.
How to appeal a declined status:
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/appeal.
Enter your 13-digit ID number and registered phone number.
Click Send PIN and enter the OTP sent to your phone.
Select the month or months you want to appeal.
Submit. You can appeal once per declined month, within 90 days of each decline.
SASSA Status Says "UIF Registered"
SASSA's system found your ID registered with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). Because the SRD grant is only for people with no other financial support, a UIF registration disqualifies you.
What if I am not actually receiving UIF? This is very common. Many South Africans are registered with UIF because a past employer contributed on their behalf, even though they never claimed benefits. SASSA's automated system sometimes flags these people incorrectly.
How to fix it:
Visit your nearest Department of Employment and Labour office and request a UIF status letter confirming you are not an active beneficiary.
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/appeal and submit a reconsideration appeal, attaching the UIF letter as proof.
Appeal within 90 days of the declined month.
Monitor your status. ITSAA reviews each case individually, which can take 60 to 90 days.
SASSA Status Approved But No Pay Date
Your status shows "Approved" for the month, but where the pay date (Payday) should be, there is a blank, the word "null," or nothing. This is different from declined. SASSA confirms you qualify but has not yet assigned a payment date.
Why it happens:
Banking details not yet verified. After you add or update a bank account, SASSA runs a check to confirm it belongs to you, which takes 2 to 5 business days.
Bank account not in your name. If the account name does not match your ID exactly, the pay date is withheld until resolved.
First approved month. First-time pay dates are assigned in batches in the last week of the month, sometimes later than for returning beneficiaries.
No payment method selected. Without a linked collection method, the system cannot generate a pay date.
End-of-month processing lag. Approved status and pay date do not always update at the same time.
Postbank migration not completed. If you are still on the old Postbank Gold Card, your pay date can be withheld until you switch.
How to fix it:
Wait 24 to 48 hours if the status just changed to approved today.
Log into srd.sassa.gov.za and confirm your account number, branch code and account type are correct, and the account is in your name.
Add a payment method if none is selected.
If you use Postbank, confirm you have the new Black Card, not the Gold Card (see the card section below).
If the pay date is still missing after 5 business days, call 0800 60 10 11 and ask for manual pay date allocation.
If unresolved, visit a SASSA office with your ID and a bank statement so staff can verify your details on the spot.
SASSA Status Approved But No Payment Received
Your status shows "Approved" with a pay date, but the money has not arrived.
Why it happens:
Your banking details are incorrect or the account is inactive.
The account is not in your own name.
A processing delay: payments can take up to 5 business days after the scheduled date, and 2 to 3 working days to reflect in your bank.
A retail or Post Office collection point experienced a cash shortage.
Your Postbank Gold Card has not been migrated to the new Black Card.
How to fix it:
Log into srd.sassa.gov.za and verify your banking details.
Confirm the account is in your name.
Update details at srd.sassa.gov.za if wrong.
Allow 5 business days from your pay date before escalating.
If still unpaid, call 0800 60 10 11 with your ID number.
If you are on the old Postbank Gold Card, migrate to the Black Card.
Postbank Gold Card to Black Card: Deadline 31 August 2026
If you collect your grant with the old Postbank Gold Card, it stops working after 31 August 2026. After that date you will not be able to draw your money, even though it stays safe in your account, until you switch to the free Postbank Black Card. Over 800,000 beneficiaries were still affected in early 2026.
To switch, visit your nearest Post Office or Postbank branch with your South African ID and your current card. The new Black Card is free. Do this before the deadline to avoid a payment interruption.
What Does "Not Selected" Mean on SASSA Status?
"Not selected" for a month means SASSA reviewed your application for that month and did not approve it, usually because the means test detected income or a disqualifying flag for that month. Like "declined," it is per month, and you can appeal.
A related message, "post office not selected," refers to your collection method rather than your eligibility. It means a Post Office collection point was not set for you, and you should select or confirm your payment method on srd.sassa.gov.za.
What to do: If you believe "not selected" is wrong, submit a reconsideration appeal at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeal within 90 days of that month, with supporting documents.
What Does "Referred" Status Mean?
"Referred" means your application was escalated for additional manual verification before SASSA makes a final decision. The automated system detected something needing a human review. It is not necessarily negative.
Some beneficiaries also see the phrasing "you are not on referred status," which simply confirms your application is not currently in manual review.
What to do: Wait. No action is required. Review can take several weeks. Check weekly and watch for an SMS from SASSA.
SASSA Status Shows "Pending" or "Period Pending" for Months
"Pending" or "period pending" means SASSA has not finished verifying your application for that month. Most verifications complete within 7 to 14 days of the month opening, so a pending status inside that window is normal.
When to act: If a month has been pending for more than 90 days with no update.
What to do:
Confirm the phone number on your application is active and receiving SMS.
If you changed numbers, update it at srd.sassa.gov.za.
After 90 days, call 0800 60 10 11 and ask an agent to check your verification.
Visit a SASSA office with your ID if the call centre cannot resolve it.
"Bank Details Pending"
Your application is approved but you never linked bank details, so SASSA cannot pay you.
How to fix it:
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za and log in with your ID and registered phone number.
Open the bank details section.
Add your South African account number, branch code and account type. The account must be in your name.
Wait 2 to 3 business days for verification before payment.
"Application Already Active"
This appears when you try to submit a new application but your ID is already linked to an existing one.
This is not an error. It means you already have an active application and do not need to reapply. Reapplying creates a duplicate that can flag your existing application. The related on-screen message "an application has already been registered or submitted in this system matching the ID provided" means the same thing. Just check your existing application's status on srd.sassa.gov.za.
How to Change Your SRD Phone Number
A wrong or old phone number is behind many failed status checks, because the OTP and status SMS go to the number on file.
How to fix it:
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za.
Open the phone number change option.
Verify your identity with your ID number.
Enter and confirm your new number.
If you have forgotten which number you used and cannot receive the OTP, call 0800 60 10 11 or visit a SASSA office with your ID so staff can update it. Every change on the portal is free, and no one should ever charge you to do it.
SASSA Portal Not Loading, 404, or Page Unavailable
The portal is sometimes unavailable, most often at month-end when millions check at once and the server is overloaded.
How to fix it:
Wait 2 to 4 hours and retry.
Clear your browser cache and cookies, then reload.
Try a different browser or switch between mobile data and Wi-Fi.
Meanwhile use an alternative: WhatsApp 082 046 8553, or USSD 1203210#.
If it is down for more than 24 hours, call 0800 60 10 11.
How to Check If Your SRD R370 Application Is Approved
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za.
Enter your 13-digit ID number and registered phone number.
Click Submit.
Look for "Approved" next to the current month. If approved, a pay date appears next to it.
SASSA also sends an SMS to your registered number when your grant is approved, including your payment date. If your status shows approved but no pay date, see the section above.
