Tax ID vs BVN vs NIN: What’s the Difference?

ByTemiloluwa Olukoju
January 19, 2026•5mins Read

Key Takeaways

1. As of January 1, 2026, individuals no longer apply for a separate Tax ID. Your National Identification Number (NIN) automatically generates your 13-digit Tax ID, retrieved through the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) portal.

2. A Bank Verification Number ensures secure banking transactions and remains a separate system from your Tax ID.

3. The NIN provides official proof of identity and access to government services, and is now also the foundation of your Tax ID.

4. The three numbers are not fully independent anymore. Your Tax ID is directly derived from your NIN, while BVN remains its own system, managed by banks and NIBSS.

Key Takeaway.

1) A Tax Identification Number is used for tax purposes, enforced by the NTA under Nigeria’s tax law.

2) A Bank Verification Number ensures secure banking transactions.

3) The NIN provides official proof of identity and access to government services.

4) The identification numbers may seem similar, but each serves a distinct purpose and is issued by a different authority.

Introduction.

In Nigeria, various identification numbers play crucial roles in taxation, banking, and national identification. Among the most common are the Tax Identification Number (TIN), Bank Verification Number (BVN), and National Identification Number (NIN).

These identification numbers are essential for individuals and businesses to stay compliant, especially following the Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA) 2025, which restructured how Tax IDs are issued starting January 1, 2026.

In this article, we will break down each identification system, its purpose, and who needs it, along with its key differences.

What is a Tax Identification Number (TIN)?

A Tax Id is Nigeria's unified tax identification number, issued by the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS)  under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA) 2025, effective January 1, 2026. It replaces the old, separately issued Tax Identification Number (TIN) system.

For individuals, your Tax ID is generated automatically from your NIN, you do not register for it separately. You retrieve your 13-digit Tax ID by visiting taxid.nrs.gov.ng, entering your NIN and date of birth, and confirming your details. The process is free and takes only a few minutes. For businesses and organizations, the Tax ID is generated from your CAC (Corporate Affairs Commission) registration number instead.

Older 10-digit TINs issued before 2026 are still recognized during the transition, but banks and government agencies are increasingly requiring the new 13-digit Tax ID for account compliance, so it is worth retrieving yours even if you already have a legacy TIN.

The Tax ID allows authorities to track tax obligations, monitor income, and also enforce penalties for non-compliance for individuals and businesses under the Nigerian tax law.

Individuals who need a Tax ID include all Nigerian taxpayers, business owners, and organizations engaging in financial transactions that require tax reporting.

What is a Bank Verification Number (BVN)?

The Bank Verification Number (BVN) is a unique identification number implemented by the CBN and usually issued by banks in Nigeria to individuals to reduce illegal financial activities in Nigeria. It is primarily used for banking security and identity verification.

The BVN helps reduce fraud in the banking system, verifies identity, and links all bank accounts of an individual across Nigeria. It is required for financial activities such as opening a new bank account, applying for loans, and performing large transactions.

Unlike your Tax ID, your BVN is not derived from your NIN. It remains a separate biometric identifier managed by banks through NIBSS. If you need to check your existing BVN, see our guide on the BVN code for GTBank and other Nigerian banks.

What is a National Identification Number (NIN)?

The National Identification Number (NIN) is a unique number issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to all Nigerian citizens and legal residents.

The NIN serves as proof of identity and is increasingly required for official documentation, including SIM card registration, passport applications, and access to government services. It also links citizens to national databases to improve governance and security.

Since January 2026, the NIN plays an additional role: it is the foundation your Tax ID is generated from. This makes the NIN the most central of the three numbers for individuals, since it now underpins both your national identity and your tax identity.
