Introduction
A NIN slip shows your National Identification Number (NIN) and the enrolment details captured by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). Since July 2026, NIMC says you can preview and download an official copy free in its NINAuth app. Older guides list standard and premium versions. The slip records your enrolment details. It is not a plastic ID card.

What Is a NIN Slip?
Your NIN is the 11-digit number NIMC assigns after you complete biometric enrolment. The slip is the printout or digital document that carries that number. Guides that reproduce it describe a page showing the NIN, name, date of birth, gender, photograph and a QR code.
Do not confuse the slip with the receipt you get on enrolment day. After biometric capture, an applicant receives a Transaction ID slip as evidence of the transaction. It is later used to collect the NIN slip, and the NIN is issued a few working days after enrolment.

Types of NIN Slip You Will Come Across
1. The digital NIN slip in NINAuth is the current official route. NIMC announced in early July 2026 that the updated app lets users preview their official slip and then share or download it. NIMC said this removes the need to visit agents, queue at registration centres or pay third-party fees.
2. The standard and premium slips belong to an older arrangement. In 2022, NIMC introduced an improved slip with a QR code and offered premium and standard versions that users could download and print. Guides published in 2026 still describe the premium version as a paid, card-style print with a QR code, at around ₦1,000 to ₦1,200. NIMC's July 2026 announcement does not say whether a separate paid premium slip still exists.
3. A laminated or plastic copy made by a cyber café or an agent is a different thing. It is a private copy of the slip, not a new NIMC document. Some websites also call the enrolment printout a temporary slip. Treat that as informal wording.
How to Get Your NIN Slip
If you are already enrolled, use NIMC's NINAuth app. First, install NINAuth from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store, or update it if you already have it. Second, open the app and sign in as it prompts. Third, preview your official NIN slip. Fourth, choose the option to share or download it.
NIMC's announcement says the download costs nothing and that third-party fees are no longer needed. If a third-party site asks for your NIN, phone number and other details before it will "print" a slip, stop.
If you have not enrolled, you need to complete NIN enrolment first. NIMC also lists a NIN slip re-issuance service on its website for people who cannot retrieve their slip. Confirm the current process and any fee with NIMC before you pay anyone.
Can You Use a NIN Slip as ID?
Institutions decide which documents they accept, and policies differ. NIMC has published statements describing the slip as an acceptable means of identification, but those statements are older and do not bind a bank. How to Tell If a NIN Slip Is Genuine
The honest answer is that a printout cannot prove itself. Fonts, layout and a photograph are easy to copy. What you can rely on is a check against the source.
For a slip you downloaded yourself, the assurance comes from where it came from. Get it from the NINAuth app, not from a link sent by a stranger. For a slip someone else hands you, look for the QR code. In 2022, NIMC said the QR code on the improved slip could be scanned with the NIMC Mobile ID app. The route may have changed since NINAuth launched. Confirm the current method with NIMC before you rely on it.
A business should go one step further and verify the NIN itself. That means sending the number to a verification service with the customer's consent. The service returns the record NIMC holds, and the business compares the name and date of birth with what the customer declared.
Protect Your NIN When You Share a Slip
A slip carries your NIN and your photograph. A clear copy gives an impostor a head start. Share it only where it is required, and never post it publicly.
Where an organisation supports it, share a virtual NIN (vNIN) instead. NIMC's vNIN is a tokenised version of your NIN that lets you be verified without exposing the real number. You can generate a vNIN through the NIMC Mobile ID app or USSD, using the organisation's ShortID or agent code.
Phishing is a live risk. In early June 2026, NIMC warned about a fake portal offering "free modification of NIN details" that was designed to harvest personal data. NIMC said NIN updates go only through its approved self-service platform on the official portal. Use the same caution with any site that offers to print or fix your slip.
Why Businesses Should Verify the NIN, Not the Slip
A slip image is a claim. It can be edited, reused or borrowed, and it says nothing about whether the person presenting it is the person on it. For a bank, fintech or gaming operator onboarding thousands of customers, three checks matter more than the paper. Does the NIN exist? Do the name and date of birth on NIMC's record match the customer? Does the customer's face match the record?
According to Youverify's API documentation, the Verify NIN service takes the NIN and a subject-consent flag. It can compare a customer's name and date of birth against the record and match a selfie to the stored photograph. The response returns identity details such as names, date of birth and photograph. Consent must be recorded, and the result should be stored as evidence.
